Nicaragua and Ometepe

Ometepe - The Beautiful Volcanic Island

One of the most beautiful places Netman has visited - Click here for more info

The island of Ometepe lies in the top portion of Lake Nicaragua which is the 3rd biggest fresh water lake in the work. The lake can boast of sharks but Netman has not seen any. However, the fish in the lake do have big teeth! Ometepe has an area of 276 km². It is 31 km long and 5 to 10 km wide. The island has a population of 35,000, and an economy based on livestock, agriculture, and tourism. Plantains are the major crop.

Ometepe is made up of 2 Volcanos.

  • Concepción
  • Maderas

The main inhabitants of the island live on Concepción. This volcano is still active and bellowing smoke can often be seen.

Since 2004 Netman has been involved with supplying schools with equipment along with the help of schools and teachers from Cambridgeshire England.

Schools in Cambridgesire have been very generous with their gifts

We have managed to support 5 schools from Primary to Secondary School with books, paper, pen, pencils and sports equipment.

We have taken computers and projectors for the Christian Vocational Center (CVC) on the island.

It's without doubt that its fun providing basic items that we in the UK take for granted.

Whilst we were in a school in the village of 'Tilgue', a young boy called Tom gave a moving speech to us.

This year (2009) Netman's son Isaac (16) and Mr. Jeremy's son Joseph (10) will be hosting a football tournament in Urbeite on the Island of Ometepe. They hope to provide the poorest children in the region with sports fun and promote sharing of equipment between local communities. Above all to have fun!
