Welcome to Netman's Computers Page

Computers:

Netman has been in the computer industry for over 15 years. Dealing in Hardware, Software, Networks and Training for groups and individuals. Netman decided to go international in 2004 and put his computer skills to good use in Nicaragua.

The photos to the left show computers installed in the CVC.

Getting involved with a charity called SIFT enabled Netman to use his skills as a computer engineer. In Nicaragua where technology equipment is expensive, Netman delivers redundant computers to schools around the island of Ometepe situated in the middle of lake Nicaragua.

How does it work in Nicaragua?

In the society that we live in here in Europe, we live in what is deemed as a

'throw-away society'.

Not that this is bad in itself but looking at poor countries such as Nicaragua you could say we have more than we ever need. What Netman does is receive redundant computer equipment from anyone who is willing to donate it. Below are people and companies who have donated some equipment already.

Computers being used in the CVC
The students of the CVC (Christian Vocational Centre) use computers to enable/further their computing skills in information technology using MS-Office and general windows packages. Education forms an positive part of the lives of many young people in Nicaragua and Netman believes that this can lift the country as a whole out of poverty.

Here is a growing Hall of fame.

NOTE! When Netman receives a computer system, all Hard disks are wiped before shipping as you cannot be too careful in this day and age of who is trying to retrieve other peoples data.

All the computer equipment is checked over by Netman and is then assembled in the U.K The computer systems include Monitor, CPU, Keyboard and Mouse. Each station is then itemised and packed as a complete unit. When enough units are assembled then they are transported to Seaton in Devon England where they are weighed and wrapped ready for shipping to Nicaragua. A lot of the equipment is carried by hand as aircraft hold luggage. As you can imagine with the aircraft fuel costs it can become quite expensive to transport heavy equipment across the pond. Also where computer systems are received and not all the components meet the minimum spec then the internal parts such as CD-ROMS, DVD-ROMS, Floppy Drives, memory, power supplies (240v/115v) and cooling fans are bundled together and shipped as spare parts. Nothing goes to waste.

So what sort of equipment is Netman looking for?
CPU's... Desktop and or mini towers that are light to save costs on shipping. Preferable the power supply should be switchable between 115VAC and 240VAC. The processor is requested to be no lower spec 800Mhz. 1Ghz is GREAT! This is so that the computers can last for more than a year in the Nicaraguan climate.
Mouse & keyboards...PS2 (Small Dim plug) Mice and Keyboards are always in short supply. Mice can either be ball operated or optical. The Nicaraguan students use a spanish keyboard but are quite at home using the US/English style keyboard.
Monitors...Netman is not collecting monitors anymore as they are too heavey and the baggage allowance with the airlines has reduced..
Hubs & Switches...Redundant hubs and switches are always welcome as they provide connectivity in classrooms. They also provide a simple communication highway from Teacher to student via a VNC interface.
